Mutation results from exposure to pitch, a volatile living tar that occurs naturally underground. Pitch exposure is almost always fatal to humanoids and other large creatures*.
In rare circumstances an afflicted individual is able to undergo a process known as pitchblending, a metamorphosis wherein the body mutates and deforms but no fatal harm is done. By the end of the process no further mutation is possible, whether as a result of the original incident or by subsequent exposures. Still, pitch should be considered extremely hazardous to mutants.
The quality of life for surviving pitchblended varies, and the prognosis usually hinges on the degree of internal damage. Outward physical disfigurement is inevitable. The morphology of mutation varies drastically, from tumescence and loss or growth of appendages to the development of outright animal features. Gnomes are notably the least susceptible to drastic disfigurement, rarely suffering any musculoskeletal transformation.
